This will be a presentation that centers on the Himalaya region and reflects on Art Wolfe’s most personal statement to date. A grand adventure begins with a brief look back at the history and events in Wolfe’s formative years that triggered his imagination and wonder towards a path of blending his creativity and art with photography while documenting the wild world. Spend the evening with Art as he shares stories, video and stunning photographs that will move and inspire you.

February meeting: Saturday, Feb 20 from 1-3p at Tressa’s Bakery in Duvall. The topic will be “Equipment Show & Tell”. Bring in all your photography gear to share with the rest of the group. (i.e. camera, lenses, flashes, tripods, camera bags, etc.) Anything you use that you find very helpful when shooting. This might be a good opportunity to check out a lens that you’ve wanted to buy or to compare tripods with someone else.

March meeting: Ray Pfortner will be doing another Q&A session on photography as business. I’m in the process of firming up the dates, times & location. The tentative date is March 6.

April meeting: A field trip to the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle to snap some pictures of some unique boats (details to follow soon)

We decided to start up the monthly assignment again. February’s assignment: In honor of the Winter Olympics, take pictures of things that contain the colors of the Olympic rings, which are: Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Black. Be creative & make it interesting. Find some things around the house, like a blue chair. Or venture out & snap a shot of a moss-covered rock (green). Signs, cars, whatever. Just make sure you get a shot of each of the colors. Some other assignment ideas we had:

 - Night-time
 - People
 - Stock
 - Food

Craig gave an informative talk on his photography and the process. A big highlight was walking through the gallery with Craig making comments about his pictures. He told us where they had been taken, along with some of the details. Such as having to get the keys to a church in Scotland from the flower shop across the street!

Craig’s exhibit, “Elemental Cross” will be showing until November at Inscape Gallery.

Ray Pfortner has worked in photography for over 20 years – as a stock agent, an editor, a consultant, a photographer, and an educator. He teaches and consults on the business of art and on photography across the US. Ray received Bellevue College’s 2008 Margin of Excellence Award, nominated by his students for his contributions in adult education. He also received the North American Nature Photography Association’s 2006 Recognition Award for making a difference with his photography and its 2003 Fellow Award for career contributions in nature photography. His own photography is widely published. His primary interest is in coaching new talent and in having art and especially photography seen and sold. Ray holds a Masters from Duke and a BS from Yale.

He’ll be discussing the business side of photography, copyright and model release issues, contests and auctions, working with non-profits, magazines, turning art into cards…. and more! Or we can just make it a 2-hr Q & A session.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, October 24 at the Bellevue Library from 2-4p in Room 6, as to accommodate Ray’s busy schedule.

This is going to be a great session, so hope to see you all there!

“Elemental Cross”

I am drawn to the cross by forces I cannot fully explain.  Eleven years ago I embarked on my first major photographic exploration.  It was then, behind the ground glass of a view camera, that I was first attracted to the cross as a photographic subject.  The cross engaged me as an element in architecture and in other usage where it was a commanding component.  I could not rationalize the attraction, but it was there and it was powerful.

Following my instinct instead of a logical mind, I began to seek out crosses that showed diversity in form and purpose.  Looking deeply, I found I could capture such diversity through illustration of the cross as a memorializing icon and as a primary ritualized constituent, often within an architectural context.  Thus far, my explorations in search of crosses have ranged from remote villages to cities and towns across America and Europe.  I love that the form or shape of the cross can vary widely, born of rough-hewn wood, stone, gilded metal, or other materials.  Whether new or old, each cross has definite purpose that stands a test of time.

The cross, while depicted physically in many variations throughout the world, has a uniformity of purpose at a basic level: spiritual inspiration.  This powerful purpose and usage manifests itself across otherwise diverse cultures and geographies.  For example, I discovered scenes in Minneapolis, Guanajuato and Iona that if taken out of immediate context are virtually indistinguishable by locale.

Working with film and large format cameras including a 100-year-old 11×14 camera enables me to produce images with classical appeal.  I craft the images in either silver gelatin or platinum / palladium, depending on the finished look best fitting each image.  I am proud to display these images at Inscape Gallery, Washington Cathedral / Washington Seminary.
